Following a career in the public, private and charitable sectors, Jo was appointed as the Business Manager at one of the largest special needs school in Kent where she was responsible for leading all aspects of the school’s business management functions as well as having input into decisions regarding teaching and learning. Jo left this position in June 2018 to become a Business Management Consultant at Herts for Learning, a non-for-profit education services company. Jo is also an accredited School Resource Management Advisor working on behalf of the Education Skills & Funding Agency.
Jo holds Masters’ degrees in Leadership (MA) and Business Administration (MBA) as well as a Certificate in Accounting, the National General Certificate in Safety & Health (NEBOSH), and the Certificate and Diploma in School Business Management. She is accredited by the Department of Education as a School Resource Management Advisor providing financial consultancy to academies.
Jo is a Fellow of the Institute of School Business Leadership (ISBL) and is their Special Schools Lead Practitioner through which she facilitates collaboration between ISBL special school members, and designs and delivers the special schools’ workshops at ISBL’s national conference each year. She is a member of the ISBL Advisory Panel, Editorial Board and International Research Special Interest Group.
In 2016, Jo was awarded ISBL’s Chief Executive’s Award for Exceptional Contribution to the School Business Management Profession for her work in raising the profile of special schools and carrying out research for the benefit of the school business profession. With a passion for facilitating learning and collaborative working on a school, county, national and international level, Jo constantly looks for opportunities to enhance her own learning.
She is a Specialist Leader of Education in School Business Management and Financial Management with the Collaborative Learning Alliance of Special Schools. As a member of the American Association of School Business Officials International, Jo attended their annual conference in Arizona in 2016 where she met members of the ISBL International Research Group from America, Australia, Canada and South Africa. Jo is also a member of the International Leadership Association and attended their annual conference in Belgium in 2017. In addition, Jo is a member of the British Educational, Leadership, Management and Administration Society (BELMAS) and presented the results of her MA Leadership dissertation research study on school business management and leadership at their conference in 2018.
